2/16/2024 - February 2024 FAQs

Image
Hey everyone! Its finally here! 2024 February FAQ! A lot of us were expecting it two weeks ago, but late is better than never.  1) If a model begins its move within an enemy model's Control Zone and chooses to move away (as one of the options listed), can the model moving away still Charge a different enemy model? A. Yes This one came up at the Nova open, and apparently other places as well. The argument to my knowledge was that the moving away bullet did not explicitly state you could charge something else, preventing you from doing so. I know that this was not a favored ruling there, and got some larger community members to reach out directly about this specific situation to get this FAQ. Good to have it here, because I definitely feel it would make heroic combats and flying models be absolutely terrible if control zones prevented them from going elsewhere and charging. 2) If a model has two weapons (such as a Dragon Cult Acolyte or a Corsair Reaver) and wishes to swap them for a...

2/1/2024 - 2024 Hobby Bingo

Image
BINGOOOOOOOO Hey Everyone! To get started with my 2024, I am going to attempt to finish a full Hobby Bingo card! Every year, the MESBG team sends out a bingo card to encourage people to get to hobbying and to experience the different parts of the game. The rules are simple, in that you want to fill out the whole thing, and that there are no double dipping. Let's see how much I have right off the bat from my January. I could have gotten the easy big ones, like finishing an army of basing everyone, but I wanted to focus on checking off as many boxes as I can to start. First up was the Wild Man Oathmaker. I had painted one a ways back with my first army, but I have had two sitting around needing paint for nearly a year and a half. I painted him up all over again for my revamped Dunland to match with the rest of the horde. For this box, I have a few applicable models. For starters, I added hair to the balding sword Wild Men of Dunland (and gave him an axe) for my LVO list. I also shi...

1/25/2024 - LVO and 2024

Image
Hello Everyone! I'm back! (Hopefully). Work has been a bit crazy the last few months, so I haven't been able to focus much on MESBG, but hopefully I have hit the other side and can start chugging along again. To start, I want to go over my tourney experience at the Las Vegas Open last weekend! LVO was a 5 (originally 6) round, 800 point tourney. We used the veto system and the scenarios were put together in randomized pools. Players were allowed to bring both a good and evil army, and swap each round, or just one army. While 48 tickets sold, there were a few drops, but we still ended up with 37 participants. LVO doubled in size from last year, and FLG committed to upping the count to 64 tickets next year! We had many tables from all over, with the TO, Patrick, and the folks from Arizona contributing a ton.  I had walked around on Thursday, tables were not fully set up yet (I forgot to take a full picture of everything set up).  My list was a Huscarl heavy Dunland (who'd...

8/31/2023 - Vrasku, Uruk-Hai Captain, Uruk-Hai Shaman, Uruk-Hai Drummers.

Image
Hello everyone! Today we are going to be talking about Vrasku and some generic Uruk-Hai heroes for Isengard Imma firin ma lazar Vrasku is a strong ranged Hero of Fortitude for Isengard, coming in at 65 points. His cost is 5 points higher than a scout captain, but that comes with some bonuses. As a named scout captain, he shares most of his stats of Fight 5, Strength 5, Defense 5, 2 Attacks, 2 Wounds, Courage 4, but gets an upgraded shoot of 3+, and 1 additional might, sitting at 3 might, 1 will, 1 fate. He comes with a sword and crossbow, and access to both heroic march and heroic accuracy. He just seems like an Uruk-Hai captain with a crossbow, firing a crossbow every turn, just hitting more often. Oh look, he rolled a 2 and missed his shot, nothing to worry about...  Thud Hello everyone, I am Scottt, Scott forgot that Vrasku is an Expert Shot , allowing him two shots a turn with his crossbow and got clipped in the head. I am sure he will be fine. Vrasku is in a weird spot for Ise...

8/24/2023 - The Scout Captains of Isengard

Image
Hello everyone! This week we are going to be talking about the Uruk-Hai Scout Captains: Lurtz, Ugluk, Mauher and the generic Uruk-Hai Scout Captain. "Find the Halflings! Find the Halflings!" Lurtz is the only Hero of Valor for Isengard. At 90 points, he is a big expensive compared to other Isengard heroes, who usually average 65 points. He has the standard fight 5 for Uruk captains, with a better than average shoot value of 3+. Strength at standard 5, defense is at 6. I have seen the often question about Lurtz's shield and defense value. Note that if a model is equipped with a bow, they gain no defensive benefit from a shield, but do get the ability to use the shielding rule. Lurtz is a bit of a game-breaker here, as the defense from the shield is actually baked into his profile, since normally, a hero with light armor is defense 5. This also comes in handy when playing the Lurtz's Scouts legion, as if he throws his shield, he maintains defense 6. Being an angry Uru...

8/17/2023 - Saruman & Grima

Image
Hello everyone! This week we are going to be talking about Saruman and his super side-kick, Grima Wormtongue! Saruman is the Hero of Legend for Isengard. He comes in at a whopping 180 points, and is able to pay an additional 10 points for a horse. His stat line follows the standard for wizards, at fight 5, strength 4, defense 5, 1 attack, 3 wounds and courage 7, along with 3 might, 6 will and 3 fate. He of course comes with a Staff of Power, providing him 1 free will per turn for casting and resist tests. Wizards are not known for their combat prowess, earning their keep with their spells, and Saruman is no exception. He has all the standard bells and whistles for casters, with exceptional cast requirements, matching The Dark Lord Sauron for the spells they share, and even exceeding his lesser form of the Necromancer. His casting ability is supported by his special rule Lord of the Istari , a passive rule that allows him to re-roll one dice when making a Casting or Resist test. This is...

8/10/2023 - Isengard Overview

Image
Hello everyone! As the name of the blog implies, I am a huge Dunland fan, and by extension, Isengard. I figured I would just dive right into some overview of Isengard today, and split into more detailed breakdowns of units, legendary legions and army composition in the coming weeks, then use that structure to talk about some other armies. One of my favorite things to say when someone is talking about any army, and I mean any, is "That sounds mighty Huscarlable." My personal way to play Dunland, which I do caution tends to only work at 700+ points, is very heavy on Dunlending Huscarls, with usually 50% of the force comprised of them. I will get more into it when I talk about Dunland in future posts, but suffice to say, I am going to call things Huscarlable many, many, times.  So lets get into it. Isengard Isengard is a jack of all trades faction, and as one of the core four factions, it has received a lot of love with releases, with getting a legendary legion in Quest of the...
